Czech Republic’s famous Czech-born comedian and actor Marek Salko has died.
He was 73.
Salkow died in a Czech hospital on Tuesday.
Salko’s “The Salkovskij” TV show and film, which premiered in 1984, were hugely popular in the Czech Republic, where the country has the second-largest population after Germany.
He also became a star in the United States and became the face of the Czech national anthem in 2000.
In 2009, he made a controversial speech in front of the European Parliament in which he criticised the EU for allowing more freedom for the continent’s 28 member states.
He said the EU was allowing countries to go back on their commitments to open their borders to migrants and refugees.
Sarko was also widely regarded as a model of an open and tolerant society, a fact that led to him being nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2010.
